Wojciech Wiewiórowski named new data protection chief | In Principle

Wojciech Wiewiórowski holds a doctorate in law and is a lecturer at the University of Gdańsk and director of the IT Department at the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Administration. He is also secretary of the Government IT and Communications Committee and a mediator for the Internet Domains Arbitration Court at the Polish Chamber of Information Technology and Telecommunications. In 2006–2008 he co-chaired the state commission handling property claims by the Polish Orthodox Church.

Wiewiórowski’s scholarly interests focus on Polish and European law of new technology, introduction of IT solutions in public administration, and issues concerning development of legal information systems. As the new Inspector General for Personal Data Protection he plans to address such issues as personal data protection in social networking websites.

The Inspector General for Personal Data Protection is responsible for oversight of compliance with regulations for processing of personal data, issuing administrative decisions and handling enforcement complaints. The inspector general also administers the register of databases of personal data and reviews proposed laws and regulations affecting personal data protection.
